This was our first mixtape together since the invention of the LuckyMe label. A promo mix for the streetwear brand Oddities, made way back in July 07. We took this mix to Barcelona’s Bread and Butter trade show and 300 CDs flew the coop. One of the CDs ended up with Benji B and caught us some early support on his Deviation show. We remember recording it round at Mo’s moms place – laying out vinyl on the floor to plan it out. Years later we can see how weird and important this first mix together was – a galaxy of genres that inspired us. I mean, don’t get me wrong it’s not a masterpiece at all. It was one casual night with a pizza and some records but in hindsight this tape is a mission statement of sorts for what this genre-free label has become.

Hud Mo was accepted as student to Red Bull Music Academy in Toronto in 2007 and made this mix on his return. It was on this trip that Steve Beckett of Warp Records publicly asked him to release on the label. A pretty incredible forum to be accepted onto a label we so greatly admired.

A real mixtape project by the first rapper we ever collaborated with – Maryland’s Oddisee. We looked up to these guys so much prior to actually becoming friends, working and touring with them. Even now if you download this 24 track zip you’ll be quietly convinced that Oddisee is one of the most charismatic and intelligent rappers and beatmakers still doing it. It’s no surprise that since this tape went live in 2008 his stock has risen to the point he’s considered underground royalty in the States with his group Dirty District.

“Goose… A verb, which means to grab someone between their butt cheeks and to squeeze, almost with an intent to hurt, although it is often done in a joking, playful manner between friends. The most common way to goose someone is with the fingers and thumb of one hand. The fingers grab from the bottom, and the thumb from the top.” – this is a largely instrumental mix by Jay P of post-dilla beat music alongside underground hip hop and vintage dills’. At the time we were all self conscious of ‘dilla’ as a genre – but as an artist there is no denying his importance.

I arrived at work today a lil late and there was a brown envelope posted through the door with c/o LuckyMe. Inside was a 45 vinyl effect CD-R and a note typed in Akzidenz Grotesk with the following message from 7VWWVW – ” Recorded at the stroke of midnight on July 18th 2008 using two domestic record playing devices and a modest assortment of analogue synthesisers. Band personnel took it in turn to select, hence the relatively diverse nature if the musical presentation. Thanks. ”

For those just getting familiar with us, we all met in Glasgow. And hanging around the best record shop in Scotland, Rub A Dub records, there’s this alpha male looking dude called the Jackmaster – our main poppa dawg. He sells our records to this day as our main distributor. He heads Numbers and we often play shows together.

He did this mix for Sinden’s Kiss FM show and we thought it was extremely good. Be wary though. This shit is not suitable for work. Unless you work at Rub A Dub. It’s club shit.
